Last Day at Wimberley First Baptist Church

Turn this up loud 'cause Ozzy is doing the soundtrack here.

This was our last day at church, where we've been for 5 years or so.

It was sad for me. This was where I envisioned my "old country church" memories to take shape. They never quite did. My wrestlings with God and the romantic notions of all that means have wavered to and fro for many a years now.

I still love the meaning of God.

I like good old Black Sabbath music too.

Here's my expression of friends, God, the old days, and where I stand and fall and stumble.

  1. I sort of get it, but not really.

Are you done with church, this particular instance of church, God, steadycams or all of the above?

We still need to all go to Gateway. They don't have all the answers and you'll probably have some sort of contrary reaction to the hipster music/style (I know I did at first), but at least the struggle is out in the open.

And you'll probably find some Sabbath fans.

  2. good news but why did it take you 5years!!?? sorry to hear about that, what a colossal waste of time.

Some churches can be entertaining for real though. That crazy big one in Peoria i would go to just for the total WTF? + big laughs, it's like a hilarious parody of itself, surely better then anything on TV during that time.

This one in Wimberley though was just depressing. I'm truly amazed you rode it out for so long.

go see that movie the Watchmen btw, that's a good 3 hours spent!

  3. Well I hope you can find a place to challenge you a lil bit. I know you'll miss the fellowship of the people you met. My one memory of your church: being woke up at butt crack of dawn,(after genie showing up 3 in da morning loud as firecrackers) and having bout 3 minutes to shipshape up somewhat presentable. But I got my ass up didn't I...lol Tone

  4. If you get it at all that's great.

It's just an expression of heart and art. Nothing more or less. There's a whole lot of mixed feelings I always go through in and around church and was mixing them all in through this video and music.

  5. "THERE'S JUST NO EASY WAY OUT"

Should probably be the title of this. Most of the Ozzy lines fit this pretty good for what my alter-ego (ala music and comments) is playing out - versus my filmed self (the "me" that's out there).

  7. Son, remember your grandfather and what he tried to teach you. Although there is no perfect church we must never tear down a particular church. I don't appreciate what you said about my church in Peoria. Also, it is not good for your neices and nephews to read your negativity. My father used to attend several local churches and I never heard him put a church down. He tried to add to their service. Remember how he always sat in the front row. And, you would sit on his lap and he loved every minute of it. You are a wonderful son but you look for perfection. Guess what? You won't find it.

  8. Wow. Busted from my Mom!

Sorry about saying your church is cheesey mom. I guess I just yearn for something more intimate like Grandpa used to experience in contrast to the more modern large-scale-entertainment churches.

Young ones that read this already know most of what I'm talking about and laugh it off.

Also, they'll have to wrestle with their own search for intimacy with God sooner or later anyway and the cultural entrapments they find themselves in is part of the process they have to see and get through.

God transcends us all I have to believe.

And Grandpa does not have to live in this day and age like I do, but I know he'd understand if he did.

Love you, Mom. You're the greatest!

    (keep smiling, you're my inspiration)
