13 Things I've Found to be True

  1. What you decided at 10 years of age is pretty much who you are now.
  2. Beauty is more important than truth.
  3. All the hard questions can be answered by looking at the context of the question.
  4. Better to listen than to speak.
  5. Those concerned about the existence of God are on the left and right sprectrums of the bell curve of wealth - those without are hoping for good to prevail, those WITH have the time and freedom to wonder is Good prevails, and those in the middle are struggling in the balance (thereby consumed by the world around them.) (not REAL sure about this one either)
  6. If you spill your drink, you've already drunk enough.
  7. If you walk sideways, you know you are drunk.
  8. The purpose of life is to have as much sustainable joy/fun as possible. (? - This one I'm not sure about.)
  9. Its ok to cuss if no one's around to hear you.
  10. Everything that lives fights to survive - even hummingbirds.
  11. There is no good and evil outside of the context in which it is discussed.
  12. The context above is usually time or the subjectivity of the experience.
  13. To get a cramp out of your leg calf, get out of bed, stand on that leg and force your heel to the ground. It will ease.

  1. Interesting post...certainly these are truths you find to only represent yourself right or do you think that's a given?

Truths 11 & 12 puzzle me the most because you say that good and evil do not exist outside the context of time. Both God and Satan exist outside and inside the dimension of time therefore how could your understanding be true.

I'd love to hear your logic on this.

  2. I made my own list, but I could only come up with six...

    1. "Not" working is harder than working.
    2. People get mad when you pee in the sink (ditto for the back porch).
    3. Hit the "save" button often.
    4. Super Glue rarely works on anything other than the cap to the tube (and your fingers).
    5. Just because you "can", doesn't mean you "should".
    6. Although it looks really cool in the movies, it never works in real life.

  3. man... i love your list, Watts...

I've always asked myself in the past, if I was on my deathbed, and and to tell someone dear everything that i was absolutely sure about.... I alawys came up empty minded, with nothing.

I forced myself one day and came up with this list... and even two of these i'm not sure of. (go figure)...

Good to hear your witty voice again, Mr. Watts. :)

  4. The acts of even God and the devil can only be described as actually good or bad within the context of the discussion itself.

Natural catastrophe wipes out homes and people. In the immediate context, these people suffer and that is bad for them. Ages later it may turn out good for the rest of the world to have eliminated these people. (Think, Noah's flood)

God initiated both these and the only change of the declaration of good and evil is the context of time and space we're talking about.

In the same vein, we all know bad things that happened to us that later contributed to good things that again may later contribute to bad things. All that changes is the "context" - the scope and time - of what we're talking about.

This isn't the same as saying good and evil are relative. I'm only saying the description of that AS good or evil can only be taken in what CONTEXT we consider.

It was bad for Jesus when he died on the cross, but it was good for us. (change of context - i.e. relationship)

I'm curious David what you think about #2...?
